What Is Oxygen?
Do you know the story of Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? Dr. Jekyll was a doctor in
the daytime. He helped people to live. At night, he
became Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde was a monster who killed
people in the street. No one knew that Dr. Jekyll
and Mr. Hyde were the same person.
Oxygen is like Dr. Jekyll and Mr.
Hyde. It is a colorless, odorless gas which does
Oxygen gives us life. Without
oxygen, we cannot breathe, the heart cannot beat,
the brain cannot think, and the muscles cannot move.
We take in oxygen through our
lungs. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of
our body. Our cells use oxygen for metabolism, to
create energy for all of our body’s needs.
Oxygen is the most important
healer, the most effective detoxifying agent, the
best blood cleaner, and the most powerful
Why do we age? Why do we die?
What causes our bodies to age and eventually die?
Oxygen the killer.
A molecule of oxygen in its
normal form has two electrons. As the body uses
oxygen, some molecules of oxygen are left with only
one electron. These "low energy" molecules of oxygen
are called free radicals." The free radicals grab
electrons from other molecules. The process is
called oxidation. You can see oxidation when iron
turns to rust. In the same way molecules in our
cells lose energy. Our cells begin to age.
We get large amounts of oxidants
from smoking, drinking alcohol, and eating deep
fried and fatty foods. Household chemicals,
antibiotics, sunshine, pesticides, and pollutants
add oxidants, too. Stress and anger produce oxidants
What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are molecules that have extra
electrons. They combine with the free radicals and
make them harmless. Our bodies normally make
antioxidants to protect us. As we get older, our
bodies do not make enough antioxidants.
We can do many things to protect
ourselves from oxidants. We can choose foods that
have a lot of antioxidants: fruits and vegetables,
especially colorful ones, red beans, certain nuts
and spices. Many people also take supplements such
as beta carotene, vitamins C and E. We can avoid
places, chemicals, habits, and foods that promote
oxidation. We can lower stress through exercise,
meditation or prayer.
