A Politicianís Migraine

Majid Ali, M.D.

Political maladies often make headlines. People often are infatuated with politiciansí diseasesóperhaps it is benign voyeurism, not a sinister delight in othersí sufferingóand news stories about them stimulate high interest. This should have considerable potential for good but it nearly always goes unrealized. One would expect that much authentic and useful education would be made available for the general public and some of that would help people who suffer from the malady in question. Regrettably, this seldom, if ever, happens in reality. Drug makers are the parties that draw rich benefits from such activity in the news media. Asafe and effective nondrug remedies are derisively dismissed as unscientific.

In July 2011, it was reported that the presidential candidate Michele Bachmann suffered from severe migraines. It unleashed a storm of a national discussion of what it might mean to have a woman president who suffered from migraine. Since such attacks are known to render some individuals dysfunctional for hours or daysóThomas Jefferson stayed holed up in a dark room at Monticello on many occasions for daysóthe Bachmann story also raised speculation about the circumstances of this happening during modern crisis.

Migraine affects women three times as often as men. This fact did not escape the notice of some TV pundits. No surprise there. They love dirt, and when no real stuff is available, they quickly make some up. Here is how The New York Times of July 26, 2011 quoted Craig Partridge, chief scientist of a high-tech Michigan companyt: "Imagine someone having driven a nail straight through your head, and then they periodically tap on it to remind you itís there. Itís that painful." Now who would want a woman president in that state, really? Might there be a subliminal message there.

Next consider this from the Times (July 26, 2011): "Some migraine sufferers, including Ms. Bachmann, experience pain so severe they go the emergency room. But a recent review of emergency room doctors in Ontario found that patients were rarely treated with the proper drugs for migraine, according to a report last month in the journal Pain Research & Management." What subliminal massage might the Times be delivering here?

Suppression of Anti-migraine Nutritional Measures

I include the Bachmann migraine story in my series of tutorials on migraine to make a larger point. In the frenzy of feeding on TV and in the print media, I did not find a single reference to mold allergy and gut fermentation, the two causes of migraine which I nearly find in my migraine patients. Nor were there any references to nutritional therapies which are both safe and effective to prevent migraine attacks. Might there be some hidden agenda here as well? Why donít prestigious publications, such as The New England Journal of Medicine and The New York Times, seek opinions from integrative physicians with vast experience in treating migraine? Could it be that fear such mentions might legitimize nondrug therapies to the chagrin of drug companies that enrich them (journals and papers) with their enriching ad dollars?

When President Reaganís Alzheimer disease story broke, it brought fabulous wealth to companies involved with research in genetics and drugs. No funds were made available for trials for validating the clinical benefits of robust nutritional therapies for improving memory and other mental functions. Will the Bachmann migraine story meet the same fate? Dirt, drugs, and deception? I am afraid it will.

The Times Chimes In For the Drug Industry

Consider the following from a letter to Editor of the Times published in followup to its Bachmann story:

"Migraine remains poorly understood, frequently undiagnosed and often mistreated. We still donít know what causes migraine or why treatments work only on some people in some situations. Sufferers often endure a lengthy process of trial and error to discover an effective (drug) treatmentóif theyíre lucky. Once one is found it may not alleviate every attack, and it may prove ineffective over time." Parenthesis added.

Many readers will be chagrined by the heading of this segment. I anticipate their challenge. A reader sends a letter to the editor and paper publishes it. Fair enough! What could be wrong with it? Here is the problem: The New York Times does not publish letters written by proponents of natural therapies. The reason for this is simple: It receives no ad dollars from them.

We still donít know what causes migraine! This is a gross distortion of the facts. The causes of migraine are well known to those who diligently detect them. We do not the causes of migraine. Sufferers often endure a lengthy process of trial and error! True, but only in the hands of doctors who refuse to study nutritional and environmental medicine, and the clinical benefits of self-regulation. In other words, the cause of migraine is unknown to those wish not to know it. The New York Times does not point this out to its readers
