OXYGEN, ENERGY, AND NUTRITION

Energy From Foods

Life is energy. Health is a state of energy balance. Diseases are states of energy imbalance. Energy in the human body is produced by oxygen. From these simple facts of science, I establish that health is a state of "energy-oxygen balance." Diseases are states of "energy-oxygen imbalance." This, simply stated, is the core of the Unifying Oxygen Model of Health and the Unifying Oxygen Model of Disease. In this first tutorial of the Oxygen, Energy, and Nutrition Series, I present the basic facts of how the body generates energy from foods.

Foods are packets of energy. The body breaks down foods to release energy for all bodily functions, such as breathing, moving, and eating. The body also uses energy to multiply cells, build tissues, and grow body organs. The disposal of bodyís waste also requires energy. All aspects of the release and utilization of energy in the body are governed by oxygen. Oxygen also controls enzymes (substances that act like catalysts) that digest foods and absorb their components. Considering these and other roles of oxygen in the body, several years ago I designated oxygen as the king of the human body which controls and regulates every transaction in the body. I also consider oxygen to be the single most important nutrient of the body.

Types of Foods and Energy Production

*  Sugars and Starches

*  Proteins

*  Fats

Sugars and starches are made up of multiple glucose molecules linked together in various shapes. Proteins are composed of chains of amino acids folded in different shapes. Fats are made up of fatty acids, often also hooked to proteins and sugars. The bonds between glucose molecules, amino acids, and fatty acids are called energy bonds since they store energy. Oxygen (and oxygen-related elements) break these energy bonds to release energy contained in them. Additional energy is released when these substances are further broken down to water and carbon dioxide. Minerals and vitamins are obtained from water and food.

Types of Enzymes

Enzymes are oxygenís workhorses. Most of them are present in the body in their inactive forms. Oxygen (and oxygenís offspring, such as hydrogen peroxide), activate them to facilitate actions and reactions, sometimes using energy and sometimes generating it. Enzymes are essential for the digestion of foods and detoxification. Cells can neither renew themselves nor multiple without enzymes. Injured cells cannot heal without enzymes. The immune system cannot work without enzymes. Simply stated, enzymes are "life-catalysts." Following are the major types of enzymes:

*  Oxygen-driven energy enzymes

*  Digestive enzymes

*  Clot-busting (proteolytic) enzymes

*  Detox enzymes

*  Enzymes for multiplying cells and tissue buildup

*  Enzymes for dissolving cells and tissue breakdown

Types of Metabolism

Metabolism (metab-o-lism) is the process by which oxygen-driven energy reactions in the body occur to maintain life and preserve health. It includes processes of energy generation and utilization, food digestion, cellular growth, tissues buildup, and tissue break down. There are two types of metabolism:

* Catabolic (catab-o-lism) involving breakdown of tissues

*  Anabolic (anab-o-lism) involving buildup of tissues

*  Both aspects of metabolism are energy-dependent.

Toxins Block Oxygen-Driven Energy Production

The cycles of energy production are blocked by:

Toxic foods,

*  Toxic environments, and

*  Toxic thoughts.

The major types of environmental toxins include the following:

*  Mold toxins (in my view are the most important)

*  Environmental toxins (some natural, others synthetic)

*  Pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides

*  Toxic metals (mercury, lead, arsenic, and others)

*  Natural plant-derived toxins (peanut and other aflatoxin)

*  Microbial toxins

The above simple scientific facts explain the beginnings and progression of all chronic diseases caused by the trio of toxicities of foods, environments, and thoughts. I exclude genetics in this article because there are no effective gene therapies for chronic disorders at this time. Focus on genetics in the study of the oxygen-energy interactions in human nutrition blames parents and disempowers the individual.
