Lung-Over-Mind Healing

Majid Ali, M.D.

Nature designed the lungs to slow down a troubled heart and lower raised blood pressure. It designed the mind to quicken the heart and tighten arteries—blood pressure rises as a consequence of that—in order to respond to stress. In times of chronic stress, one would want to "slow-breathe" to calm the heart and normalize blood pressure. And yet, rarely do people use the lungs to cope with chronic stress.

The lungs work to send oxygen to all parts of the body. The mind favors some cell populations over others. When one analyzes whether slow breathing is being done correctly, the mind tightens the artery, reducing blood flow and hence restricting oxygen supply. The lungs fight the mind but up to their limit. Then the mind overdrives the lungs—hyperventilation is the term for this state—and robs tissues of oxygen, the ultimate nutrient in the body.

So often, the more the heart desires simplicity, the more the mind craves complexity. The mind clarifies things. It also scrambles things. I have taught breathing methods for healing to my patients for nearly thirty years. Feather Breathing is the simplest method in which one:

* Sets no goals;

* Completely ignores how one breathes in;

* Breathes out slowly and comfortably; and

* Never analyzes whether the breathing is done correctly.

Now what could be simpler? A lot, a whole lot! I see many people who mess up even such simple steps. Recently, a patient expressed frustration with Feather Breathing. Gently, I described the above four steps. She seemed puzzled, as if annoyed by the simplicity—let down, so to speak by the absence of complexity that people expect in doctors’ offices. I typed and printed some text about the conflict between the mind and the lungs, and asked her to place it on her refrigerator door. She read it and thanked me. Below is that text for other readers.

The prevention of heart disease is a matter of the heart, not of the mind. The lungs are the guardian angels of the heart. This is not the viewpoint of American cardiology. This is a crucial insight my patients gave me.

Of course, we need the mind. We need it to help us survive when life is threatened—escaping a house fire, for example—by sending more blood to the leg muscles. However, we do not need it to mindlessly tighten muscles when talking to the family in the living room, doing dishes in the kitchen, at work, or waiting for a friend. At such times, we do well without engaging the mind’s passion for tightening arteries and rushing the heart.

What is the lesson? Breathe slowly and keep the mind out of it. The lungs must be allowed to breathe their air—freely, lovingly, and airily. The mind has to do its thing. The lungs have to do what they do. In the end, the lungs always prevail. "Lungs-Over-Mind Healing" seems to be a suitable designation for it.
