Intravenous Hydrogen Peroxide Infusion

Oxygen Therapies — Part 2

Majid Ali, M.D.

In 1999, I introduced the term oxystatic therapies for treatments that restore oxygen homeostasis in the body. Intravenous hydrogen peroxide infusions, in my clinical experience, are among the most effective intravenous treatments. My colleagues at the institute and I have administered close to 50,000 hydrogen peroxide infusions over the last twenty years. To-date, we have not encountered any long-term adverse effects of this therapy.

Hydrogen Peroxide Is the Secretary of State of the Oxygen President

In this section, I furnish a brief review of the oxygen order of human life to provide a framework of reference for better understanding of the scientific basis of direct and indirect oxygen therapies for flu and flu-like illnesses described in this chapter.

Oxygen is the organizing principle of the human body and governs the aging process. It drives all phenomena involved in maintaining oxidant-antioxidant (redox) equilibrium. It also preserves its own homeostasis. For the "oxygen president" of the human redox world, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) serves as the secretary of state. Nitric oxide in that world may be seen as serving as the secretary of defense. I consider both H2O2 and nitric oxide as the two premium and ubiquitous oxystatic molecules—substances that participate in myriad pathways to preserve oxygen homeostasis in health as well as reverse oxygen dyshomeostasis in disease. I devoted Oxygen and Aging to this subject.

In clinical medicine, the complementarian and contrarian roles of H2O2 are misunderstood. The literature of H2O2 is voluminous. As in the case of ozone, one can literally find reports to support any point of view concerning the clinical aspects of H2O2. H2O2 promotes cellular differentiation and healing. H2O2 injures cells. H2O2 is a vasoconstrictor. H2O2 is a vasodilator. H2O2 is proinflammatory. H2O2 is anti-inflammatory. H2O2 causes autoimmune injury. H2O2 facilitates in controlling autoimmune injury. H2O2 exerts salutary regulatory effects on cell membrane receptors and channels. H2O2 disrupts the structure and function of proteins that form those receptors and channels. H2O2 is proapoptotic. H2O2 is anti-apoptotic. H2O2 is procancer. H2O2 is anti-cancer. I hear such words from academicians as well as from clinicians. I seldom, if ever, find those speakers interested in the conditions that reveal the astounding complementarity and contrariety in the biologic roles of H2O2.

Peroxide Foot Soaks

I always prescribe hydrogen peroxide soaks along with intravenous peroxide drips. The foot soaks are very helpful in nearly all cases of inflammatory, autoimmune, degenerative, and malignant tumors. The most dramatic demonstration of the benefits are seen in cases of chronic low-grade inflammation, tissue swelling, and poorly healing injured ligaments and joint tissues. Recent research has shown how minute amounts of hydrogen peroxide can activate several genes that are responsible for clearing tissue debris and improve venous and lymphatic circulation.

In Table 1-3, I furnish the composition of hydrogen peroxide protocols in use at the Institute.

H2O2—Not Merely an Oxidative Therapy

In the past, hydrogen peroxide has generally been designated as a 'bio-oxidative' therapy. That designation, however, seems off the mark, since in most clinical settings, H2O2—admittedly a potent in vitro oxidant—serves as an in vivo antioxidant. The morphologic and biochemical evidence for that has been reviewed. As for the clinical efficacy of hydrogen peroxide, I consider it among my higher priorities for reversing chronic degenerative, ecologic, and autoimmune disorders, as well as for controlling chronic indolent infections. Of course, I prescribe such infusions to accompany other infusions containing suitable amounts of redox-restorative substances (RRSs)—vitamins, enzymes, glutathione, taurine, and others. Equally important is the issue of integratively addressing all relevant issues of the bowel, blood, and liver ecosystems. Similarly, we find H2O2 foot soaks or baths to be very valuable adjunct therapies for chronic inflammatory and degenerative lesions that cause recurrent edema of lower legs and feet. I address the subjects of oral and topical hydrogen peroxide and ozone therapies later in this chapter.

H2O2: a Misunderstood Molecule

Hydrogen peroxide is a potent in vitro oxidant. And yet, it serves as an effective in vivo antioxidant in chronic electron deficiency states, such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, fatigue associated with malignant tumors treated with chemotherapy, and others. It is procoagulant under certain conditions and anticoagulant under others. It is proinflammatory in some roles and anti-inflammatory in others.26 It induces some genes and suppresses others. It is a critically important second messenger in many pathways. It is procancer in some aspects and anti-cancer in others.

As for its antimicrobial effects, for decades the view that H2O2 directly kills microbes has prevailed. Recent experimental evidence strongly challenges that simplistic view. As for degenerative disorders, my late friend Charles Farr observed that intravenously administered H2O2 substantially increases the basal metabolism. He put forth his hypothesis that the agent exerts its beneficial effects by enhancing oxygen metabolism. I believe that view will stand future scrutiny. In 1998, I published my hypothesis that chronic energy disorders—fibromyalgia, fatigue associated with cancer, autoimmune disorders, and others— result from a state of dysoxygenosis caused by altered function of oxyenzymes and abnormal expression of oxygenes. In that context, I believe that H2O2 reverses the local and/or systemic oxidative-dysoxygenative state through a multitude of its effects on oxyenzymes and oxygenes. For more information, I refer the readers to the tenth volume of my textbook The Principles and Practice of Integrative Medicine.

Types of Oxystatic Therapies

Following are my preferred oxystatic therapies which I integrated with bowel and liver detox therapies for maximal results:

1. Hydrogen peroxide foot soaks with Meditation

2. Intravenous hydrogen peroxide infusion

3. Nasal oxygen therapy

4. Hyperbaric oxygen, and singlet oxygen

therapies

5. Intramuscular nutrient injections

6. Intravenous nutrient infusions with vitamin C
