Insulin Stress Test
Majid Ali, M.D.

My patients have taught me to use insulin profile as a reliable stress test. No, this is not the kind of stress test done for the heart by cardiologists. I have found the heart stress test to be misleading sometimes, as have others. I have never been mislead by the “Insulin Stress Test.” I do not know if anyone else has also found it to be misleading. That is not likely since The test is my invention and I have not yet seen anyone comment on it.

For some years I have recognized insulin profile to be one of the most reliable tests for the general health improvement or deterioration over period of years (blood testosterone level being another excellent test for this purpose). I illustrate my core points of Insulin Stress with a case study to illustrate my main point. Following that I briefly outline my Oxygen Model of Diabetes and Crank-Crank-Shaft Model of Insulin Toxicity to shed light on the oxygen-stress-insulin dynamics. I discuss these subjects at length in my video seminars, which can be downloaded at http://www.majidali.com).

Case Study

A 64- yr-old 5' 8" woman weighing 190 lbs. consulted me for joint pain (polyarthralgia), muscle pain (myalgia), nerve pain (neuropathy), allergy, cough, and sneezing. An insulin profile shown in Table 1 revealed hyperinsulinism (more properly designated as insulin toxicity) with peak insulin level of more than three times the normal value. With our integrative detox and nutritional care program, which included insulin reduction plan, she lost about ten pounds and reported near complete relief within nine months. She remained well for about one year. I saw her again in August 2013. She told me she was still mostly doing well. I ordered a repeat insulin profile. Four weeks later I reviewed the results (shown in the lower half of Table 1, showing doubling of her peak insulin level with her since the previous study). She was disappointed with the results. “I’m still on the insulin reduction food plan. Then why this insulin doubling?” she asked. It was then that I focused on the stress-insulin connection and learned that she lost her job and lived with uncertainty and high stress seven months before the second insulin profile was done.

Oxygen Model of Diabetes

My Oxygen Model of Diabetes is a unifying model that explains all aspects of diabetes Types 1 and 2—causes, clinical course, consequences, and control—on the basis of impaired oxygen signaling, diminished oxygen’s detergent functions, and interrupted oxygen’s cellular detox and repair functions. I put forth this model first in a series of articles in 2000 and presented it at length it in my book “Dr. Ali’s Plan for Reversing Diabetes (2006)” (available for download at www.aliacademy.org)

The Crank-Crank-Shaft Model of Insulin Toxicity

In my book entitled “Dr. Ali’s Plan for Reversing Diabetes,” I illustrated the insulin/insulin receptor dysfunction with a crank/crank-shaft analogy. Below is some text from that book (available at http://www.majidali.com).

The cell membranes become resistant to insulin when they become chemicalized—plasticized, so to speak—and hardened, immobilizing the insulin receptors embedded in the membranes. The insulin receptor is a protein that criss-crosses the cell membrane like a cord. One of the consequences of grease buildup on cell membranes is that insulin receptor becomes turned and twisted, literally and figuratively. In a previous paper, I offered the analogy of a crank and a crank-shaft to explain insulin resistance. I visualize insulin as a crank—a device that transmits rotary motion—and the insulin receptor protein as a crank-shaft embedded in the cell membrane.
