Fibromyalgia

Majid Ali, M.D.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is often considered a medical mystery. It need not be. I often hear all laboratory tests are negative in patients with FM. That's not true. Most physicians are uneasy when confronted with persons suffering with FM. That need not be so. I sometimes hear FM is not treatable. Nothing is farther from the truth.

Why are so many people confused about the cause of FM? Because it doesn't fit into some neat model of a disease category. Why isn't FM treated successfully? Because there are no drugs for it.

Three Rs of Fibromyalgia

* . Fibromyalgia is Real

*. Fibromyalgia is Reversible

*. Fibromyalgia cannot be Reversed with drugs

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition with three main symptoms: (1) persistent muscle pain (myalgia) with painful spots in soft tissues (trigger points); (2) disabling pain; and (3) brain fog (and related disorders of mood, memory and mentation). Although victims of early and mild cases of fibromyalgia may not suffer from on or two of the three core symptoms, persons with advanced disorder do so in all cases.Other symptoms include flu-like symptoms of malaise, aching joints, and abdominal bloating and cramps; bowel irregularities; non-restorative sleep; PMS symptoms and menstrual irregularities in women; cold sensitivity; and depression.

If you have read articles about chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) written by doctors who care for a large number of patients with that syndrome, you know that muscle pain, fatigue and brain fog are also the three main symptoms of (CFS). This is why I consider FM and CFS twin sisters. In 1993, I published an article in the Journal of Advancement of Medicine (1993;6:83-96) in which I proposed that CFS is caused by accelerated oxidative injury to human enzyme systems. (Oxidation is the process of decay, loss of energy (electrons). Enzymes are natural substances that facilitate life processes in the body. In 1995, I published The Canary and Chronic Fatigue and presented extensive evidence to support my theory. Since then hundreds of medical reports have validated my theory.

What causes fibromyalgia? What causes accelerated oxidative injury? Undiagnosed mold allergy and food intolerance, sugar overload, denatured foods, antibiotic abuse, pesticides, environmental pollutants, abusive drug prescriptions, and lifestyle stressors. What's the proof of all that? Direct microscopic examination of a drop of blood of the patient performed with a special type of microscope called high-resolution phase-contrast microscope with darkfield optics. Blood samples of FM and CFS patients show: (1) a large number of dead and dying red and white blood cells; (2) pine needle-like forms of solidified blood plasma (fibrin needles); (3) minute curdles of blood plasma (microclots); (4) irregular masses clotted plasma with entrapped damaged blood cells (microplaques); (5) clumped platelets; (6) excessive numbers of bacteria; and (7) overgrowth of peculiar yeast-like microbes which I call primordial life forms.

Two Microscopic Features of Fibromyalgia

Impaired oxygen signaling and detergent functions of oxygen set the stage for the development of fibromyalgia through two major mechanisms: microclot formation in the circulating blood (Oxidative Coagulopathy) and microclot formation in the circulating lymph (Oxidative Lymphopathy).

Oxidative Coagulopathy

Oxidative coagulpathy (coag-lau-pathy) is a term for formation of microscopic bloof clots in the circlating blood. Blood clots and unclots at all times. In health, microscopic clots formed in the blood are readily dissolved so that such clots are seen infrequently in freshly prepared blood smears. When microscopic clotting is speeded up by any of the factors mentioned above, excessive microclots accumulate in the blood and are lodged in different parts of the body, choking the blood supply to that part and causing accelerated oxidative injury. This is called oxidative coagulopathy. (Ref: Ali M, Ali O. AA Oxidopathy. The Journal of Integrative Medicine 1997;1:6-112.)

Oxidative Lymphopathy

Lymphopathy (lymph-au-pathy) is a term for formation of microscopic clots in lymph, the pale-white fluid that flows in lymphatic channels. Like circulating blood, circulating lymph also clots and unclots at all times. In health, like blood microclots, lymph microclots also unclot readily so that excess microclot formation does not occur. When excessive oxidative coagulopathy occurs in the circulating blood, lymph also curdles excessively. Curdles of oxidized lymph stagnate in the muscles and choke muscle cells, causing severe muscle pain and trigger points. (Ref: Ali M. Oxidative regression to primordial cellular ecology. The Journal of Integrative Medicine 1998;2:4-49.)

Trigger Points

Trigger points are painful tender ploints in soft tissues in limbs and torso. They are considered essential for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. I present this subject at length in a companion tutorial.

Outline of the Integrative Treatment Plan

Following are my guidelines for eradicating fibromyalgia. Needless to point out, evry individual is a unique and requires an individualized integrative management plan.

1. Diagnose and treat food intolerance and mold allergy;

2. Optimal choices in the kitchen: avoid sugar-insulin-adrenaline roller coasters;

3. Nutrient support: antioxidant vitamins and minerals. TPM, pantetheine, Protein and peptide formulas, Essential oils, Intramuscular and intravenous nutrient protocols (see Institute monograph for composition of protocols);

4. Support for the bowel-blood-liver trio: A. Bowel ecosystem: seed, feed and weed approach; herbs: echinecea, astragalus, burdock root, goldenseal, Pea D'Arco, artemisia; antifungal drugs such as Nystatin and Filfucan;

5. Support for the blood ecosystem: Hydrogen peroxide, ozone and EDTA chelation therapies; chromium 400-600 mcg; selenium 400-600 mcg; molybdenum 400-600 mcg;

6. Support for the liver ecosystem: Glutathione 600-800 mg; N-Acetylcysteine 600-800 mg; MSM 1,000 to 1,500 mg; lipoic acid 300 to 500 mg; 600-800; Milk thistle, schizandra, liver and gall bladder flush (under professional supervision); (8) Support for the troubled thyroid-adrenal-pancreas trio;

7. Support for the pituitary-sex hormones-neurotransmitter trio;

8. Exercise: Prayerful, gentle, non-competitive, non-goal-oriented exercise; and

9. Deep spiritual work for stress control: Prayer, meditation, spiritual surrender
