ENZYMES:
Oxygen's Workhorses

Majid Ali, M.D.

Enzymes are oxygen’s workhorses. Gently nudged by oxygen (and oxygen’s children, such as hydrogen peroxide), enzymes make things happen in the body. They facilitate actions and reactions, sometimes using energy and sometimes generating it. Enzymes are essential for the digesting of foods and detoxification. Cells can neither renew themselves nor multiple without enzymes. Injured cells cannot heal without enzymes. The immune system cannot work without enzymes. Simply stated, enzymes are "life-catalysts."

Enzymes rid the body of pollutants in the air we breathe, water we drink, and foods that we eat. The larger the amount of chemicals in our environment, the greater the need for strong enzyme systems. At another level, no healing is possible without the process of inflammation and the body cannot begin this process without enzymes.

In my Grease-and Detergent Model of Healing (see www.ethics7.org for full description), enzymes act as efficient detergents. Cellular waste and debris thicken all bodily fluids. This is especially important in the case of blood and lymph. Enzymes act as blood and lymph thinners. Beyond thickening, the circulating blood also forms microclots in everyone. Such clots are broken down by enzymes normally present in the blood. Such enzymes act as clot-busters. Regrettably, this little, if any, understanding of this in the prevailing drug medicine. I posted several dozen examples of such microclots (as well as microplaques) at www.jintmed.com).

In consideration of all of the above enzyme functions, I prescribe enzyme remedies for nearly all my patients. Below is additional information that sheds light on my clinical practice concerning enzyme therapies.

In the clotting-unclotting balance in the blood, lymph, and other bodily fluids, one family of enzymes causes clotting and may be called clotting (coagulative) enzymes, whereas another family is responsible for un-clotting and may be designated as un-clotting (clot-busting, proteolytic) enzymes. In health, the functions of clotting and un-clotting enzymes are finely orchestrated to maintain equilibrium, such that microscopic clots in small numbers can be seen in those fluids only with high-resolution microscopes. That equilibrium is disrupted in cancer.

All unhealthy cells produce excess cellular grease and increase clotting in all biologic fluids. They do so by producing prodigious amounts of acids and free radicals that solidify proteins in those fluids. It is important to realize that proteins in the body are found linked to fats (lipoproteins) and sugars (glycoproteins), so that solidification of proteins, in reality, is precipitation of lipoproteins and glycoproteins respectively. This process is analogous to solidification of Jello powder in water. Clotting is one of the potent weapons which cancer cells use to suffocate—and devitalize and eventually kill—normal cells in their vicinity. It is for this reason that I consider prevention of abnormal clotting of bodily fluids as a crucial in cancer treatment. I refer readers interested in more information on this subject to my book The Crab, Oxygen and Cancer. Volume II: The Oxygen Protocol for Cancer (2007), the chapter entitled "A cancer cell Cocoons Itself—Then De-Cocoons."

From the standpoint of clinical medicine, enzymes are classified according to: (1) the reactions they catalyze; (2) the substances they act upon; (3) the acid/alkali conditions under which they operate; and (4) the metabolic function they serve. In the context of cancer treatment, the following four families of enzymes are most important:

Energy oxyenzymes (enzymes that are directly involved with functions of oxygen in cells);

Digestive enzymes;

k Proteolytic (clot-busting) enzymes; and

k Detoxification enzymes

k Infection-fighting enzymes

k Immune enzymes

k Cancer-fighting enzymes

Detoxification enzymes

Other enzymes of interest are those involved with the repair and healing processes, and death squad enzymes called caspases.

Pottinger's Cats and 7 ps

From 1930-42, Dr. Francis Pottenger, Jr., a veterinarian of Monrovia, California examined the effects of food enzymes on the development of cancer in 900 cats over a period of 10 years. He claimed to have not encountered a single case of cancer in cats fed only uncooked foods, while cancer was common among his cats given cooked foods. To honor his work, I offer the readers the following listing of enzymes of special interest in cancer treatment:

k Pancreatic pancreatin

k Pineapple bromelain

k Papaya papain

k Pepsin

k Proteases

k Peroxidases (glutathione peroxidase and
          others)

k Pectinase for digesting pectin

Enzyme Therapies

I offer the following simplified version of various measures/therapies that fall under the broader rubric of enzyme therapies as components of the Oxygen Protocol for cancer treatment:

Conservation of enzymes

k Divinity

k Optimal hydration

k Nutritional measures to prevent sugar/insulin/adrenaline/neurotransmitter metabolic roller coasters

Regeneration of enzymes

k Oxygen homeostasis

k Restoration of the bowel, blood, and liver ecosystems

Supplementation of Enzymes

k Plant-based

k Animal based

k Major options:

k Pineapple bromelain

k Papaya papain

k  Kinases from fermented soy

Below are two of my preferred enzyme formulations:

Dr. Ali’s Digestive Enzymes Protocol

k Pancreatin 100 mg

k Papain 50 mg

k Amylase 50 mg

k Lipase 50 mg

k Protease 50 mg

The above protocol is very useful for individuals with heartburn (GERD), gastritis, gastric ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s colitis, ulcerative colitis, and other chronic inflammatory conditions of the bowel.

Dr. Ali’s Anti-inflammatory Enzyme Protocol

k Bromelain 500 mg

k Papain 50 mg

k Vitamin B-6 50 mg

k Vitamin C 1,000 mg

The above protocol is very useful for individuals with for arthritis, tendonitis, chronic joint sprains, trigger points, muscle pain and cramps, and states of soft tissue inflammations.
