What is Blood Pressure?

Majid Ali, M.D.

Blood pressure is the sideways pressure of blood against the inside wall of a blood vessel. Blood pressure is created by the force of the heart pumping blood into the arteries. Blood pressure depends on the amount of blood being pumped, and the flexibility of the artery walls.

Arteries expand for each heart beat. They relax between beats. If the arteries did not expand and relax, we could have too much pressure the moment that the heart beats, and too little pressure between the beats. Too much pressure would cause a stroke, and too little pressure would make a person lose consciousness. A blood pressure reading of 110/70 shows the two different pressures. The higher number 110 is the systolic blood pressure (when the heart beats). The lower number, 70, is the diastolic pressure, when the heart relaxes. Normal blood pressure for an adult at ease is 110/70 or 120/80.

Arteries have an intelligence of their own. They are sensitive to messages from the rest of the body. When a patient goes to see a doctor, sometimes there is the "white-coat effect." That is, the patientís blood pressure at home may be 120/70, but itís 170/90 at the doctorís office. The anxiety of being in the doctorís office can make the patientís arteries tighten. Then the blood pressure registers higher than normal. Usually, when doctors record a blood pressure of 145/90, or more, they will prescribe a drug to reduce blood pressure. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is indeed a serious condition. The extra pressure causes wear and tear on the heart and arteries. Aneurisms can form in thinning arteries. When an aneurism bursts, there can be a stroke or heart attack or death. A doctor has to medicate a patient at the level that he records for a patient in his office. Usually, the medication the prescription, or additional blood pressure drugs, are for a lifetime. In my experience, my patients who have taken the time to learn the reasons for high blood pressure, and learned natural ways of normalizing blood pressure eventually were able to reduce and then stop needing drugs to control their blood pressure. No one should stop taking their blood pressure medications without a deep understanding and long practice with natural non-drug therapies. Only when their doctor says itís time to reduce the drug, should a person do that.

I present the causes of high blood pressure in a companion tutorial entitled "Causes of High Blood Pressure."
