A1c Test Is Unreliable for Diabetes Screening

Majid Ali, M.D.

A1c test is used for diagnosis of diabetes. I think this practice should be discontinued. Why? Because this test Is unreliable for this purpose. Two case studies presented below illustrate my point. In both cases, the A1c test results would have been gravely misleading had I not done insulin profiling tests.

Two Case Study

The normal level of A1c is less than 5.7%. The first case is of a man who has diabetes with a perfectly normal A1c test value of 5.4%.. The second case concerns a woman without diabetes and a strongly positive A1c value of 6.4%. I offer some explanatory comments.

Table 1. Case 1. 54 yr-old 5' 11" Man weighing 265 lbs. Presenting With BP (185/120 down to 120/80 with Breathing, Allergy, Liver Enlargement With Cellular Death (Steatosis), Hepatomegaly, Benigh Prostate Hypertrophy, A1c 5.1% on 4.5.2013

The blood A1c test (also called glycated hemoglobin test) is a test that indicates the range of blood glucose levels during a period of 80 to 100 days prior to the time of drawing the blood sample. Specifically, the test value is a percentage of hemoglobing (a blood protein) that becomes "sticky" due to sugar attached to itóthe higher the blood glucose (blood sugar level), the larger the percentage of sticky protein.

In health, 5 to 5.5 percent of the hemoglobin protein (abbreviated as Hb) is attached to sugar. In people with diabetes, a value of 6 percent or higher is generally accepted as an indication of poor diabetes control. Some doctors deliberately allow A1c level to remain high in their patients with Type 1 diabetes. In my view, this is acceptable only if all relevant dietary, nutritional, environmental, and detox remedies have failed to keep the patient in sugar balance (metabolic equilibrium) and the A1c value below 6 percent
