Atrial Fibrillation:
When the Heart Rebels Against the Mind

Majid Ali, M.D.

Here is a revealing conversation with a patient with A-Fib (atrial fibrillation).r

"My medications are killing me," a 67-year-old women returning from a vacation.

"How many are you taking?" I asked.

"Six."

"How are they killing you?"

"They make me tired and miserable and frustrated. And they donít work."

"How do you know?"

"Because my heart still beats fast and irregularly and my blood pressure is often high."

"Who put you on these two?" I asked, pointing to pill bottles.

"Doctors in Sicily."

"What did you see them for?"

"My heart went crazy and they rushed me to a hospital."

"When?"

"Five weeks ago."

"What were you doing when your heart acted up?"

"Doing water exercises."

"For how long?"

"Just over an hour."

"How long were you in Sicily?"

"Seven weeks, maybe eight."

" Tell me how were you feeling during the weeks before you were rushed.."

"Fine."

I looked at her husband sitting next to her. He rolled his eyes. She noticed that and gave me an embarrassed look. I repeated my question,

"Tell me how were you feeling during the weeks before you were rushed.."

"Tired."

"How tired?"

"I was under a lot of stress. Our son is going through divorce. And those Sicilian nuts on the highways. I was so worried my son would get hurt."

"What else?"

"Nothing."

"You were under stress. You were tired. And still you did exercise in water for over an hour, right?"

"Yes, I thought that would help," she replied sheepishly.

"Instead it got you in the hospital, right?"

"Right." She laughed.

"What did the doctors diagnose?"

"Atrial fibrillation. They put me on that rat poison."

"You mean Warfarin."

"Yes. And two other drugs. They said my blood pressure was very high."

"Did you ever have atrial. fib before?"

"No. But sometimes I did have heart palpitations."

"What is atrial fibrillation?"

"When the rhythm becomes irregular and stays that way."

"Atrial fibrillation happens when the heart rebels agsinst the mind. Your heart had spoken to you before with palpitations. This once you ignored it for too long so it made sure your heard it loud and clear.,"I explained.

"Really?"

"Either that or gods from Mount Vesuvius sent you atrial fibrillation."

We looked at each other. Then the husband spoke,

"Once she almost drowned and we..."

"I suddenly got a cramp and thought I was going to drown," she cut him off.

"When you go to a pool do you think of that?" I asked.

"Yes." she replied.

"With all this information, can you help me understand why you did exercise in water for that long, for full one hour?"

"Because I tried to balance my energy."

"Balance your energy for so long?"

"I donít know why I did that," she answered lamely.

"We all do such things," I said sympathetically.

"I should have you in times like that." she giggled.

"Joe, would you be Dr. Ali in your next Sicility trip?" I said, looking to the husband.
