Do We Need Special Autopsy Standards for Suspected 9/11-Related Deaths?

Part 7 of the Seven-Segment 9/11-Tenth Anniversary Series

Majid Ali, M.D.

Do we need special autopsy standards for suspected 9/11-related deaths? I am a pathologist. My answer to the above question is an unequivical "No." As the death toll for 9/11 responders reaches 1000, some doctors, New York lawmakers, and journalists are demanding that the federal Department of Health and Human Services establish special autopsy standards for deaths suspected to be related to 9/11 events. Such demands seem reasonable on the surface. How can anyone be against truth telling? By their demands, such individuals also reveal a disconcerting lack of understanding of the real issues.

Pathologists are also journalists. They report on matters of biology, which does not recognize politics, official fiats, or social activism. For some doctors to join in such demands is another matter. They should know better.

Toxic Compounds in 9/11 Dust

Twin Towers dust contained an unknown number of materials initially used in the construction, some with toxic potential. An unknown number of toxic substances undoubtedly were contained in equipment and furnishing materials of tenants. Equally important, the extreme temperature of the WTC inferno created blends of toxic compounds by triggering chemical reactions among the preexisting ones. Neither the City’s Medical Examiner nor any consulting pathologists had any way of determining how many of such chemicals and in what quantities they might have been present. None of them published or released any data concerning the analysis of autopsy specimens for the components, known and unknown, of 9/11 dust. If they had, they would have fibbed. Standardized analytical technology for measuring these materials in human tissues simply does not exist. See the companion article entitled "The Sordid Untold Story of 9/11 Toxicity, Politicians, and the City’s Medical Examiner."

Limits of Autopsy Measurements

Pathologists are humbled by the limits of their work. They recognize that the presence of one pathologic lesions (cellular content of toxins in the present context) does not rule out the existence of other compounds. They are aware that uncertainty commonly shrouds both the process of dying and the antecedent molecular and tissue insults that preceded the death by months or years. Specifically, the toxicity of poison is profoundly affected by preexisting conditions, such as chronic inflammatory lesions, gut fermentation, leaky gut state, the state of the adrenal function, toxic metal load (mercury, lead , aluminum, and others), and issues of deep disappointment of life. An adequate assessment of such factors cannot be done with any degree of confidence.

Medical examiners are not encumbered by any of the above consideration. They consider themselves above the law. Most of them claim their word is the law. Again, I refer the reader to "The Sordid Untold Story of 9/11 Toxicity, Politicians, and the City’s Medical Examiner."

Special Autopsy Standards for People exposed to 9/11 Dust

I served as a hospital pathologist for 29 years and directed the autopsy service for 24 of those years. I was amused when I first came across demands for establishing special autopsy standards for 9/11 by politicians, journalists, and others. Good science is good science. Good practice of pathology is good practice of pathology. Pathologist cannot make up things just to appease politicians and journalists. How would any pathologist respond to such a request from people who have no understanding of the real issues? I wondered.

The New York City Medical Examiner declared that the death of one rescue worker (James Zadroga) could not have been caused by 9/11 dust and that the death of another person exposed to the dust (Dunn-Jones) was definitely caused by it. He was making politically convenient statements. He had no scientific basis for either assertion. I discuss these two cases at length in "The Sordid Untold Story of 9/11 Toxicity, Politicians, and the City’s Medical Examiner."

What can be expected when special autopsy standards for people exposed to 9/11 dust are established by the New York City’s Medical Examiner, or by others of his calibers?

The Seven-Segment 9/11-Tenth Anniversary Series

Ten years after that cataclysmic day, how do we now look at the issues of ethics among politicians, health officials, journalists, medical examiners, and doctors? I offer my answer to this question in my seven-segment "9/11-Tenth Anniversary Series," which includes the following:
